Abby got sent to the office...

A few weeks ago, we got a call from Abby's teacher asking us if it was okay to have her screened for the "High Potential Group". We said yes, so her IQ was tested and she was accepted in. This is a precursor to the gifted classes, which don't start until the 1st grade.
She started this month and there are 6 kids in her classroom that are in the program. (Her class gets thinned out quite a bit when 6 out of 18 kids leave for an hour or so.) She goes on Thursday afternoons during playtime and they do not miss any of their core classes. Abby call's it her "special" class. Her teacher said that the kids she's had in the program in the past have loved it.

I spoke with the program coordinator and she told me they will not focus on one particular subject but will do activities that are cross-educational. What this means is they will do an activity that would cover a few different subjects at a time. Therefore, they are not just focusing on their strengths or weaknesses but working on advanced projects in general.

We absolutely love her teacher. She touches base with us several times a week on how Abby is doing and about her progress. She is very aware of what Abby can do and making sure that she is not forgotten. She continues to challenge her and make sure she is successful in her work.

We are so proud of Abby. She really loves reading and doing all of her work for school. She just soaks up the information. Sometimes we feel like we can't teach her about things fast enough. The down side is that when we need to discuss things on a "parental level" around the kids, we've had to move on to Pig Latin. Spelling words out doesn't keep them hidden from Abby anymore. It’s only a matter of time before she cracks that code, too. (She’s gotten close.)

No one knows what path Abby will take in life, but she has so much potential and I know she will do wonderful things.
