Over the weekend we went camping. Grandpa Scheidt wanted to take his boat out and "make sure it ran" and we wanted to go camping. So we all headed to Mark Twain Lake. It surprisingly turned out really well.
The girls started out being scared of the bugs. I looked them in the eyes and assured them that we would not take them anywhere that was not safe. They did not need to be scared of the bugs and we had enough bug spay and candles, so we were good. After that, they surprised us by chasing bugs all around. As soon as it got dark, they had a blast catching fireflies.
Cameron did not enjoy the tent or maybe his pack-n-play. He woke up somewhere around midnight screaming. We tried everything to comfort him but couldn't get him to sleep or be quiet. We were worried about waking the girls and other campers nearby. So Greg and I walked him around the campsite around 1:30am in the pitch dark. Finally, Grandpa woke up and offered to take him and sleep with him in the back of the truck since it was a bit cooler in there. Only a little fussing and Grandpa got him to sleep, at least until the sun came up. Then Grandpa walked him around the campgrounds until we all woke up. (Thank you, Grandpa!)
The girls went swimming in the lake and absolutely loved it! They were so proud of themselves as to how far out they could swim with daddy's help of course. We took an hour ride on the boat and everyone really enjoyed the cool breeze and water splashing us.
Despite picking a weekend in the middle of record setting hot temperatures, we never felt that hot. Our campsite was completely covered in shade and there was a nice breeze. Swimming cooled us down (despite the water being 89 degrees) and riding on the boat was very refreshing.
Greg and I made a vow to Abby and Leah that we would camp more next year. Abby asked how many times and we said 6 (just picking a number). She was very excited at this thought and we are sure she will keep us to our promise. We hope she does. It is such cheap entertainment and the girls really benefit from being outside in the wilderness with no technology.
We'll have to plan a Perry-Scheidt family camping weekend next summer! It's our ABSOLUTE fav thing to do!
