My wonderful father-in-law, Gregory's wonderful father, took on the daunting task with no hesitation when we came to him with this crazy idea in the spring. (If he did have any apprehensions, he never let it show.) We were hoping to build something where both beds were up off of the floor and we could get 2 dressers in the room. Mike took some measurements and used a computer software program he had to design the loft.
We started on the project May 11th by painting Cameron's room. We would be moving the bunk beds into his room. Before this happened we needed to update his room since it was still painted with the nursery design. This was a sad day for me. We put so much work into painting that nursery 10years ago and now we were getting rid of it. It was hard but we did it. Cameron chose a nice shade of blue for his walls. It now looks like a big boys room. He decided he wanted a superhero room after finding a Marvel Comics framed poster at a resale shop and had to have it.
After Cameron's room was painted, all 3 kids slept in his room for awhile so that we could paint the girls' room. Abby and Leah picked the colors yellow and pink. We were worried about this at first but it turned out really nice. I guess they have an eye for interior design.
Now that the room was painted, the building could begin. It is amazing but Mike started the building on a Thursday afternoon and completed it that Sunday. The pieces were all ready and the next step was for Gregory and I to paint all of the pieces white. We DID NOT know what a huge task that would be. It seemed to take forever but we finally finished it and got the bed put back together.
The construction also included a desk for them to do their homework and a very large bookshelf. Who doesn't need a large bookshelf? We purchased two new dressers for the room and Gregory redid their closet. He moved up the clothes pole and was able to add a second pole so there is now plenty of room to hang stuff and plenty of drawer space as well. Hopefully they don't outgrow it too soon.
We put the final touches on the room. They got new curtains, a new light fixture, a new fan and some shelves. Everyone is very pleased with how it all turned out and the girls absolutely love it!
After all was said and done, the rooms were finished by June 30th. It only took a month and a half!
