Your shoe's untied...

For the past two months or so, I have been agonizing over teaching Abby how to tie her shoes. I knew it was something that we needed to sit down and do with her but we just never brought ourselves to do it. A while ago, I tried to show her, but I just couldn't put the steps into words. I got frustrated and never went back to it. I guess you could say we were lazy about it. It wasn't like potty training. That was a necessity. Tieing your shoes is not anymore. They make Velcro and she loves boots, flip flops and crocs. After talking with our Parent Educator, I felt like I needed to buckle down (no pun intended) and show her how it was done.

We went to Walmart and I found the cutest Danskin tennis for only $10. We bought them, came home and put the little ones down for nap. She sat in my lap and I started showing her how to make a loop. She made the loop then proceeded on to wrapping the other lace around it and her fingers in the correct manner. I was stunned. "Abby, who taught you that?" I asked. She responded, "Grandma Scheidt showed me." She needed only a little guidance and help tieing up some loose ends and she was good to go.

Abby tied, untied and retied her shoes the rest of the day. She was so proud of herself and couldn't wait to show dad when he got home.

So all along, she knew how to tie her shoes. We just didn't have any shoes with laces for her to show us.
